Are Fairies Real?

The reason I’m writing about this is because people are asking me if I believe in fairies. People are also asking me if I have ever seen or talked to a fairy.

I have never interacted with a fairy as far as I know. However, this doesn’t mean I have never interacted with fairies.

What are fairies?

Fairies are a mythical (or not mythical) creature that either exists in this realm or in another, but sometimes interacts with humans or lives alongside them. This is about all the traditions can agree on. Some say they are very small. Other traditions say they are human-sized. Some say they live in this dimension and that they have bodies. Others say they live in another dimension but sometimes appear to come through when the veil is thin.

Some say they help humans when given a reason. Others say that they only tend to interfere with humans. I have had clients tell me that jewelry goes missing or that candy bowls are emptied, but that in exchange, chores are done and plants are brought back to life. I suppose that fairies may be more like a strange roommate than a mystical creature.

Have you ever seen or heard a fairy?

Well, I didn’t think it was a fairy. When I was a child, my grandmother called them lutin or cobold, and  while they are somewhat different, they are French and German sprites. When I would hear the pitter patter of little feet at night, my grandmother told me it was the lutin looking for something sweet. This is one of the few memories I have of my grandmother now, but I remember wondering if what I heard was one of these sprites.

Of course, now that I think about it, I realize why my grandmother told me that what I was hearing was fairies:

It would be terrifying as a small child to realize that what I was hearing was the sound of dead people walking around my house at night. I was from a long line of psychics. Yet, I don’t think that would have been a comfort to me.

Fairies…or Ghosts?

Ghosts can do a lot of the things fairies are reputed to do. Ghosts can make food go bad by absorbing energy from it. They can also make noise, hide things, and play with pets. They can also appear to be small.

Friendly ghosts also love flowers! Weirdly enough, they do. Any fresh plant, herb, or flower will do, but especially anything that also attracts bees or butterflies.

So, have I seen or heard a fairy? Maybe I have, maybe not. Have you?
